tarts
Small filled pastries
Tarts are small pastries with a filling—fruit, custard, or savory ingredients—in an open-faced shell: apple tarts, jam tarts.
A larger version is simply a tart rather than a pie when it lacks a top crust.
Separately, tart means sharp or acidic in taste: tart cherries, a tart lemonade.
By extension, a tart remark is cutting or biting.
In British slang, a tart is a promiscuous woman or prostitute, though the word can be used more loosely for any woman dressed provocatively.
To tart up something is to dress it up gaudily or cheaply.
