tares

Weeds among wheat

Tares are weeds that grow among grain crops, especially a plant that resembles wheat until it matures.

The word appears almost exclusively in biblical contexts, from the parable of the wheat and the tares, where an enemy sows weeds among good seed: Let both grow together until the harvest.

The parable warns against prematurely judging who belongs and who doesn't.

Outside religious usage, tares is rare and archaic.
