Good Samaritan

Jericho road hero

The Good Samaritan is a figure from a parable told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, in which a Samaritan—a member of a group despised by Jews—stops to help a beaten traveler after a priest and Levite pass by.

The story answers the question "Who is my neighbor?" by showing that compassion crosses ethnic and religious boundaries.

Good Samaritan laws take their name from this parable. (Lowercase good samaritan describes any helpful stranger.)
