swagman

Australian itinerant laborer

A swagman is an itinerant worker or vagrant who travels on foot carrying a bedroll and belongings—a swag—typically seeking seasonal work.

The term belongs to Australian and New Zealand English and evokes the colonial and frontier eras: Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong.

Also called a swaggie.
