Coastal rescue swimmer
A surfman is a crew member of a coastal lifesaving station, trained in rescue operations through heavy surf.
The term belongs to the era before the U.S.
Coast Guard consolidated such services in 1915, when surfmen patrolled beaches watching for shipwrecks and launched rescue boats through breaking waves: The surfmen drilled daily with their equipment.
