surfmen

Coastal rescue crew

Surfmen were members of the U.S.

Life-Saving Service, the predecessor to the Coast Guard, who patrolled beaches and rescued sailors from shipwrecks.

They manned lifesaving stations along dangerous coastlines, launching rescue boats through heavy surf to reach vessels in distress.

The term derives from their expertise in navigating breaking waves.

The surfmen rowed through towering swells to reach the foundering schooner.

The occupation largely disappeared after the Life-Saving Service merged with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915.
