patrolman
Officer on rounds
A patrolman is a police officer assigned to patrol a particular area, typically the lowest rank in a police department.
The term appears in American police procedurals and news reports: The patrolman responded to a noise complaint.
Though still common, *police officer* has largely replaced it in formal contexts to avoid gendered language.
