superstructures

Ship parts topside

Superstructures is the plural of superstructure—a structure built on top of something else.

In architecture and engineering, it's the part of a building above the foundation, or the parts of a ship above the main deck: The vessel's superstructures were damaged in the storm.

In Marxist theory, superstructure refers to the cultural, political, and ideological institutions that arise from and reinforce the economic base of society: He argued that religion functions as part of the superstructure.
