Amaterasu

Japanese sun goddess

Amaterasu is the sun goddess in Japanese Shinto religion, considered the principal deity and mythological ancestor of the Japanese imperial line.

Her full name, Amaterasu Ōmikami, means "great divinity illuminating heaven." In myth, her retreat into a cave plunged the world into darkness until other gods lured her out.

The name appears in video games and anime as a reference to divine light or solar power.
