submachine gun
Portable rapid-fire weapon
A submachine gun is a lightweight automatic weapon that fires pistol-caliber ammunition.
Smaller than a rifle but larger than a handgun, it's designed for close-range combat and can be fired from the hip or shoulder.
The Thompson submachine gun—the "Tommy gun"—became iconic in Depression-era gangster imagery.
Often shortened to SMG in military and gaming contexts.
