strangulating
Cutting off circulation
Strangulating describes something that constricts tightly enough to cut off circulation or airflow.
In medicine, a strangulating hernia traps tissue so blood flow is blocked—a surgical emergency.
The word applies literally to throttling and figuratively to anything that chokes off vitality: strangulating debt, strangulating regulations.
