chokehold

Submission grip technique

A chokehold is a restraining grip around someone's neck, used to subdue or immobilize them.

In wrestling and martial arts, it's a legitimate technique.

When applied by police, chokeholds have caused deaths and sparked controversy: The officer placed him in a chokehold.

Figuratively, a chokehold is any tight, controlling grip: The corporation has a chokehold on the market.
