disability culture
Disabled people's heritage
Disability culture encompasses the shared experiences, art, history, language, and social practices that emerge from living with disabilities.
It includes pride in disability identity, rejection of purely medical framings of disability, and celebration of adaptive creativity: Disability culture has its own humor, its own slang, its own ways of navigating the world.
The culture developed particularly through the disability rights movement, fostering community among people whose impairments differ widely but who share experiences of access barriers and social marginalization.
