stigmas

Marks of shame

Stigmas is the plural of stigma.

A stigma is a mark of disgrace or shame attached to a person or condition: the stigma of mental illness, the stigma surrounding addiction.

In botany, the stigma is the part of a flower's pistil that receives pollen.

The plural stigmata refers specifically to marks resembling Christ's crucifixion wounds, believed by some to appear miraculously on the devout.
