self-incompatibility

Blocks own fertilization

Self-incompatibility is a genetic mechanism in flowering plants that prevents self-fertilization.

When pollen lands on a flower of the same plant or a closely related one, the plant recognizes and rejects it, blocking fertilization.

This forces outcrossing—mating between genetically different individuals—which promotes genetic diversity.

Many fruit trees, including apples and cherries, require compatible partners nearby for this reason.
