ledger lines
Extra musical staves
Ledger lines are short horizontal lines added above or below a musical staff to extend its range.
When notes fall outside the staff's five lines, ledger lines provide temporary platforms for them: Middle C sits on a ledger line between the treble and bass staves.
Also spelled leger lines.
