wine barrels
Oak aging containers
Wine barrels are large wooden containers, traditionally made of oak, used to store and age wine.
The barrel imparts flavor compounds to the wine—vanilla, spice, toast—while allowing slow oxidation that softens tannins.
Winemakers distinguish between French and American oak, new and used barrels, each affecting the final product differently.
The chardonnay spent twelve months in wine barrels.
