square-rigged
Perpendicular to keel
Square-rigged describes a sailing vessel whose principal sails are square—rectangular sails set crosswise to the ship's length, hung from horizontal yards.
This rig dominated ocean-going ships from the Age of Sail through the nineteenth century: a square-rigged clipper ship.
The term distinguishes these vessels from fore-and-aft rigged ships, whose sails run lengthwise.
