spy plane

High-altitude observer

A spy plane is a military aircraft designed for surveillance and reconnaissance, typically flying at high altitudes to photograph enemy territory or gather intelligence.

The term evokes Cold War missions like the U-2 incident of 1960, when the Soviet Union shot down an American spy plane.

Also called a reconnaissance aircraft.
