spatha

Legionary's long blade

A spatha is a long, straight sword used by Roman cavalry and later adopted by infantry, typically with a blade of 30 to 40 inches.

The term also appears in botany for a large bract enclosing a flower cluster, as in a calla lily—though this sense more commonly appears as spathe.
