palmetto
Carolina's iconic tree
A palmetto is a type of fan palm with fan-shaped leaves, native to the southeastern United States and Caribbean.
The cabbage palmetto is particularly associated with South Carolina, appearing on its state flag: palmetto-lined beaches, a grove of palmettos.
The word comes from Spanish for "little palm." (Capitalized Palmetto often appears in proper names associated with South Carolina.)
