space elevators

Cables to orbit

Space elevators are a proposed transportation system connecting Earth's surface to orbit via a tethered structure extending into space.

A cable anchored at the equator would reach a counterweight beyond geostationary orbit, allowing vehicles to climb without rockets: Space elevators could dramatically reduce the cost of reaching orbit.

The concept remains theoretical, awaiting materials strong enough to withstand the immense tension required.
