beanstalk

Tall legume stem

A beanstalk is the stem of a bean plant, which climbs by twining around supports as it grows.

The word appears most often in reference to "Jack and the Beanstalk," the fairy tale in which a boy trades a cow for magic beans that grow into a stalk reaching the clouds.

A very tall, thin person may be called a beanstalk.
