faster-than-light

Exceeding photon velocity

Faster-than-light describes motion or travel exceeding the speed of light—approximately 186,000 miles per second.

Einstein's relativity holds this impossible for objects with mass, so the term appears mainly in science fiction: faster-than-light travel, faster-than-light drives.

Often abbreviated FTL.

In physics discussions, it marks the boundary between established science and speculation.
