sonar ping
Underwater acoustic pulse
A sonar ping is the short, distinctive sound pulse emitted by active sonar systems to detect underwater objects.
The sound travels through water, bounces off objects, and returns—revealing distance and location.
The term extends to any brief electronic signal sent to check if a system or device is responsive: I'll ping the server to see if it's up.
