sonobuoy

Dropped ocean listener

A sonobuoy is a small buoy equipped with sonar equipment, dropped from aircraft into the ocean to detect submarines.

The device listens for underwater sounds and transmits data back to the aircraft or ship that deployed it.

Sonobuoys are expendable—used once and allowed to sink after their batteries expire.

The patrol aircraft dropped a pattern of sonobuoys to track the contact.
