multibeam sonar
Ocean floor scanner
Multibeam sonar is an underwater imaging system that emits multiple sound beams simultaneously to map the seafloor.
Unlike single-beam sonar, which measures depth at one point at a time, multibeam systems sweep a wide swath beneath the vessel, creating detailed three-dimensional maps of underwater terrain.
The technology is essential for nautical charting, pipeline surveys, and oceanographic research: The multibeam sonar revealed a previously unknown seamount.
