candlefish
Burning fish, literally
Candlefish is a small, oily fish native to the Pacific coast of North America, so rich in fat that dried specimens can be burned like candles.
Also called eulachon or oolichan, these silvery fish were traditionally used by Indigenous peoples both as a food source and for rendering oil.
The name reflects the remarkable oil content that made the fish literally combustible when dried and fitted with a wick.
