caplin

Small silvery fish

Caplin is a small silvery fish of the smelt family, abundant in North Atlantic waters.

Also spelled capelin.

The fish congregates in enormous schools near shore to spawn, making it easy to catch.

It serves as bait, food for larger fish and seabirds, and is eaten by humans—often dried or fried: We watched caplin rolling onto the beach in Newfoundland.
