capelin
Small Arctic fish
Capelin is a small silvery fish of cold northern waters, important as food for larger fish, seabirds, and marine mammals.
It spawns in massive numbers along Arctic and subarctic coastlines, where it has long been harvested for fishmeal and bait.
In some regions, capelin roe is eaten as a delicacy.
Also spelled caplin.
