Nat Turner
Nat Turner was an enslaved Black American who led a violent rebellion in Virginia in 1831.
Turner and his followers killed approximately sixty white people before being captured and executed.
The uprising intensified Southern fears of slave revolts and led to harsher restrictions on enslaved people.
Turner remains a contested figure—revolutionary hero to some, murderer to others.
