skewer

Meat-threading stick

A skewer is a thin pointed rod—wood, metal, or bamboo—used to hold pieces of food together for cooking: chicken skewers on the grill, fruit skewers for the party.

To skewer is to pierce with such a rod, and figuratively, to criticize sharply or expose mercilessly: The columnist skewered the mayor's hypocrisy.
