pans

Sweeps the camera

Pans are broad, shallow cooking vessels, typically metal, used on stovetops for frying, sautéing, and simmering.

The word extends to similar containers used for other purposes: a gold pan for prospecting, a bedpan for the bedridden, or the pan of a toilet.

To pan is to wash gravel in search of gold, or to criticize harshly: Critics panned the film.

In filmmaking, to pan is to rotate a camera horizontally across a scene.
