impale

Run a spike

To impale is to pierce through with a sharp object—a stake, spear, or spike.

The word suggests violent penetration that fixes the victim in place: The knight was impaled on the enemy's lance.

Historically, impalement was a method of execution.

Figuratively, to be impaled is to be trapped or stuck in an uncomfortable position: impaled on the horns of a dilemma.
