shortwaves

Long-distance radio signals

Shortwaves are radio waves with frequencies between about 3 and 30 megahertz, capable of traveling long distances by bouncing off the ionosphere.

Before satellite communication, shortwave radio was the primary means of international broadcasting: We listened to the BBC on shortwave.

The term also refers to the radios that receive these frequencies: He collected vintage shortwaves.
