stub

Hit your toe

A stub is a short remaining piece left after the main part has been used or removed—the stub of a pencil, a ticket stub, a check stub.

These remnants often serve as records or receipts.

In computing, a stub is placeholder code that stands in for functionality not yet implemented.

To stub your toe is to strike it painfully against something, and to stub out a cigarette is to extinguish it by pressing the burning end against a surface.
