sanitariums
Medical rest retreats
Sanitariums is the plural of sanitarium, a facility for treating chronic illness or promoting recovery, particularly associated with tuberculosis treatment in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Patients were sent to sanitariums for rest, fresh air, and supervised care: The mountain sanitariums filled with consumptives seeking a cure.
The word is now largely historical, though it sometimes appears for rehabilitation facilities.
Also spelled sanatoriums.
