Jonas Salk

Jonas Salk was the American medical researcher who developed the first effective polio vaccine in the 1950s.

His inactivated vaccine, administered by injection, helped end the polio epidemics that had paralyzed thousands of children annually.

Salk famously refused to patent his vaccine, forgoing potential wealth: When asked who owned the patent, Salk replied, "The people."
