Salk vaccine

Injected polio protection

The Salk vaccine is the first successful polio vaccine, developed by American physician Jonas Salk in the 1950s.

It uses killed (inactivated) poliovirus to stimulate immunity without causing infection.

Mass vaccination campaigns dramatically reduced polio cases worldwide.

The Salk vaccine is given by injection, unlike the later Sabin oral vaccine.
