emergency departments
Acute care units
Emergency departments are hospital divisions that provide immediate care for acute injuries and illnesses—heart attacks, car accident trauma, severe allergic reactions.
Often called the ER (emergency room) or A&E (accident and emergency) in British English.
Unlike scheduled medical care, emergency departments operate around the clock and treat patients based on urgency, not arrival time: The ambulance rushed her to the emergency department.
