polio vaccine
Shot preventing paralysis
A polio vaccine is a preparation that immunizes against poliomyelitis, a viral disease that can cause paralysis.
Two types exist: the injected Salk vaccine using killed virus, and the oral Sabin vaccine using weakened live virus.
Mass vaccination campaigns beginning in the 1950s largely eradicated polio in developed countries: My grandmother remembers when everyone lined up for the polio vaccine.
