rest cure
Burnout's Victorian remedy
A rest cure is a treatment for physical or mental exhaustion involving extended bed rest, isolation, and restricted activity.
Popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was prescribed especially for women diagnosed with nervous disorders.
The term now carries historical associations with outdated medical practices: Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" depicts the horrors of the rest cure.
