sand flea
Tiny shore jumper
A sand flea is any of several small crustaceans or insects found on beaches.
The term most commonly refers to beach hoppers—tiny jumping crustaceans that swarm in decaying seaweed—or to chigoe fleas, burrowing parasites that can infest human skin.
Sand fleas bite, and their presence makes some beaches unpleasant: We left early because the sand fleas were terrible.
