calamine

Zinc-based skin remedy

Calamine is a pink powder or lotion containing zinc oxide, used to soothe itchy or irritated skin.

It's the classic treatment for poison ivy, chickenpox, and insect bites: Mom dabbed calamine on my mosquito bites.

The distinctive pink color comes from iron oxide in the mixture.
