saloons

Old West watering-holes

Saloons are drinking establishments, particularly the rough-and-ready bars of the American Old West with swinging doors and long wooden bars.

The word now sounds dated or deliberately evocative of that era.

In British usage, a saloon is a large room for gatherings, or the more comfortable section of a pub.

A saloon car is a sedan.

The cowboys tied their horses outside the saloon.
