hotrod

Modified vintage speedster

A hotrod is a car—typically an older American model—modified for speed and performance, with souped-up engines, lowered suspensions, and flashy paint jobs.

Hotrods emerged from 1940s and 1950s youth culture, when young men stripped down and rebuilt cars to race on dry lake beds and drag strips.

The term extends to anyone who drives fast or recklessly: Some hotrod nearly sideswiped me on the freeway.

Also spelled hot rod.
