soda fountains
Malt shop fixtures
Soda fountains are devices that dispense carbonated soft drinks, mixing syrup with carbonated water on demand.
The term also refers to the counter or shop where such drinks are served, once a fixture of American drugstores: They met at the soda fountain after school.
The institution has largely given way to self-serve dispensers and fast food, though some nostalgic versions survive.
