sacrificial anodes

Protective metal scapegoats

Sacrificial anodes are pieces of metal attached to ships, pipelines, or other metal structures to prevent corrosion.

The anode—typically zinc, magnesium, or aluminum—corrodes preferentially, protecting the more valuable structure it's attached to.

The anode "sacrifices" itself by drawing corrosive electrochemical reactions away from the hull or pipe: The boat needs new sacrificial anodes every season.
