making way
Clearing a path
Making way is the act of clearing a path or stepping aside so someone or something can pass: The crowd parted, making way for the ambulance.
It also describes yielding position to what comes next: The old guard is making way for younger leadership.
In nautical use, a vessel making way is moving through the water under its own power.
