rear admirals

Fleet senior officers

Rear admirals is the plural of rear admiral, a naval rank above commodore and below vice admiral.

The name comes from the historical practice of dividing fleets into three squadrons—the rear admiral commanded the rearmost.

In the U.S.

Navy, the rank has two grades: lower half (one star) and upper half (two stars).

Three rear admirals attended the ceremony.
